Scenes From The 21st Century – Issue 14

WORKING’S NOT WORKING

A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL WITH HIS HAND RAISED IN THE FASHION OF AN ARM WRESTLER. HE IS SITTING PARALLEL TO A MIRROR.*
HE IS STRUGGLING TO FORCE HIS ARM DOWN IN SUBMISSION. THE LOOK ON HIS FACE IS ONE OF DETERMINATION AND TO A DEGREE ANGER.
*A STAGE MIRROR IN THAT THERE IS SOMEONE DRESSED IN THE SAME GARB AND RESEMBLING THE MAN, IMPRESSING ON US THAT IT IS INTRINSICALLY THE SAME MAN.
AT THE SAME TIME THERE ARE MEN AND WOMEN IN SUITS ORDERING FIGURES (WHOSE GARB IS EXACTLY THE SAME COLOUR AS THE SCENERY SO ONLY THE WHITES OF THEIR EYES CAN BE SEEN) TO DISMANTLE THE STAGE SET. PIECE BY PIECE THE SET IS TAKEN AWAY TO REVEAL THE MECHANISMS OF THE STAGE ITSELF – THE FRAMES WHERE BOARDS ARE ATTACHED, THE WIRES HANGING DOWN THAT MOVE ITEMS AROUND. UNDERNEATH THE SETTEE BEING REMOVED LAY CROWN JEWELS – THESE ARE QUICKLY SURROUNDED BY MILITARY FIGURES.
THESE ACTIVITIES GO ON UNTIL ONLY THE MAN AND HIS MIRROR ARE LEFT: HE IS STILL STRUGGLING TO SUBDUE HIMSELF.
THE CURTAIN FALLS TO REVEAL AN IMAGE OF THE EARTH AS SEEN FROM SPACE.
