Scenes From The 21st Century – Issue 12.1

BREAKING THE SURFACE

ON STAGE IS A LARGE MIRROR.
A PERSON OF INDETERMINATE GENDER TAKES HOLD OF THE MIRROR AND PLACES IT FLAT ON THE FLOOR.
THEY PROCEED TO STRIP NAKED BEFORE DIVING GRACEFULLY INTO WHAT NOW IS A POOL.
(THE SOUND OF BREAKING GLASS IS HEARD OFF-STAGE.)
THE BODY CONTINUES TO GAMBOL, SURFACING NOW AND THEN AND GENERALLY SWIMMING EASILY.
ANOTHER PERSON OF INDETERMINATE GENDER ENTERS THE STAGE, AND SEEING THE SCENE ASKS:
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
THE REPLY COMES AFTER A LITTLE PAUSE.
“WHAT DO YOU THINK?”
“YOU’RE NAKED.”
“I AM.”
“YOU’RE SWIMMING.”
“YES.”
“YOU SEEM HAPPY.”
“YES.”
“CAN I JOIN YOU?”
“WHAT DO YOU THINK?”
AFTER ANOTHER PAUSE, THE SECOND PERSON STRIPS NAKED AND DIVES SMOOTHLY INTO THE MIRROR.
